Proceso de elaboración

Our database covers book publications produced in Galicia during the years of the Franco dictatorship (1939-1975). At present, the database comprises data for the nearly 800 titles published in Galician, but will shortly be expanded to include all 3500 books published during this period, in both Galician and Spanish.

The corpus for the database was compiled during the first phase of research from the collections of the central libraries of A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, Pontevedra, Ferrol, Vigo and Santiago de Compostela via a process of search and collation, which included the removal of duplicates and the unification of the resulting data. The results were then stored and indexed in a large MARC 21 database, with the subsequent addition of further samples from the University Library of Santiago de Compostela and the National Library of Spain (Madrid).

Having noted the absence of several important book titles from our database, a second phase of collection was begun, which is still ongoing. New samples have been added from the private archives of the publishers featured in our project, and from the online catalogues of libraries with historical archive collections. Our search also extended to a number of private archives and libraries in which we scrutinised indexes, catalogues, books and journals from Galicia and outside, for texts (or parts of texts) published during the period 1939-1975.

We realise that the library collections consulted do not represent the full extent of the books produced between 1939-1975, particularly for the period prior to the introduction of legal deposit legislation, or for so-called ‘self-published’ titles. Our Database should therefore be viewed as a resource in progress which we plan to continue improving and building on in the future.
